Xinjiang Tours

Silk Road Oases, Heavenly Lakes & the World Last Great Wilderness

Plan My Trip

Explore Xinjiang

Xinjiang is vast — it covers one-sixth of China. This is the land of the ancient Silk Road, where camel caravans once carried silk and spices through oasis towns, where Uyghur bazaars overflow with melons and naan bread, and where the Tianshan Mountains rise to 7,000 meters above the Taklamakan Desert.

Our private Xinjiang tours traverse this epic landscape. Hike to Heavenly Lake beneath snow-capped Bogda Peak, explore the Kashgar Sunday Bazaar — Central Asia largest market — drive the Karakoram Highway to the Pakistan border, and camp beneath the stars in the Taklamakan. This is not just China — this is the crossroads of civilizations.

Top Experiences

Heavenly Lake (Tianchi)

A stunning alpine lake at 1,980m beneath Bogda Peak glacier — hike along pristine shores, ride a Kazakh eagle hunter horse, and breathe the pure mountain air just 2 hours from Urumqi.

Kashgar Sunday Bazaar

The largest open-air market in Central Asia — Uyghur silk traders, Kyrgyz felt makers, Tajik silver artisans, and the aroma of cumin-roasted lamb skewers filling the air. A sensory overload you will never forget.

Karakoram Highway

One of the world great road trips — drive from Kashgar to Tashkurgan along the ancient Silk Road at 4,000m, with views of Muztagh Ata (7,546m) and the Pamir Mountains. Continue to the Khunjerab Pass on the Pakistan border.

Turpan Grape Valley

The hottest place in China — but also the sweetest. Walk through centuries-old grape trellises in the Turpan Depression (154m below sea level), visit the ancient Jiaohe ruins, and taste the sweetest melons and raisins on earth.

Kanas Lake — Siberia of China

A pristine alpine lake in the Altai Mountains near the Kazakh border — turquoise waters surrounded by Siberian forests. Home to the Tuva people who practice throat singing and reindeer herding.

Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves

The oldest Buddhist cave complex in China (3rd-8th century) — stunning murals blending Indian, Persian, and Chinese influences along the northern Silk Road near Kuqa. Older than Dunhuang.

Best Time to Visit

May-October is best. July-August for northern grasslands and Kanas Lake. September-October for golden poplar forests and harvest season — Turpan grapes and Hami melons at their peak. Winter is brutally cold.

Travel Tips

  • Xinjiang is HUGE — domestic flights between Urumqi, Kashgar, and Altai save days of driving
  • Altitude at Karakoram Highway reaches 4,700m — prepare accordingly
  • Try the Xinjiang big plate chicken (大盘鸡) and fresh naan bread
  • Kashgar Sunday Bazaar is best in the morning — arrive by 10 AM
