Leshan Giant Buddha
The world largest stone Buddha — 71 meters tall, carved into a cliff face over 90 years. Take a boat to see the full scale, then climb the staircase beside it. An easy day trip from Chengdu.
Mount Emei
One of China four sacred Buddhist mountains (3,099m). Hike through ancient forests and mist-shrouded temples, encounter wild Tibetan macaques, and reach the Golden Summit for sunrise over a sea of clouds and Buddha light.
Jiuzhaigou Valley
A UNESCO fairyland of 118 turquoise lakes, multi-tiered waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks. Ride the eco-bus through the valley and walk the wooden boardwalks between jewel-colored pools. Reopened and restored to its full glory.
Huanglong Travertine Pools
A 3.6km staircase of golden travertine pools cascading down a valley — dragon scale terraces filled with crystal water at 3,500m. Often combined with Jiuzhaigou for an unforgettable 3-day trip.
Sanxingdui Museum
A mind-bending collection of 3,000-year-old bronze masks with exaggerated alien-like features — a mysterious civilization contemporaneous with ancient Egypt, unearthed near Chengdu in 1986.
Qingcheng Mountain
The birthplace of Taoism — misty forests, ancient pavilions, and the sound of gurgling streams. Hike to the summit through lush vegetation and visit the Taoist temples that have drawn pilgrims for 2,000 years.
Best Time to Visit
April-June and September-November. Jiuzhaigou peaks in October with autumn colors. Spring is lush and green. Summer (July-Aug) can be crowded and rainy but the mountains are escape from the heat.
Travel Tips
- Jiuzhaigou requires at least 2 full days — combine with Huanglong for a 3-day trip
- Chengdu hotpot is the real deal — try Huangcheng Laoma or Shujiuxiang
- Chengdu is the gateway — spend at least 2 days for pandas and food
- Altitude at Jiuzhaigou (3,100m) can cause mild symptoms — take it easy on day one
